Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr
Tidy Butt Challenge
Here is why, in a heatwave, staff and students undertook a non-stop cycling challenge!

Tidy Butt is an award-winning Welsh mental health and wellbeing charity that works to reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about mental health. The charity provides education, support and community-based activities designed to help people better understand and manage their mental wellbeing. Through wellbeing talks, workshops, training, counselling, support groups, community walks and events, Tidy Butt aims to create safe spaces where people can connect, share experiences and access support when needed. Operating across Wales, the charity promotes the message that good mental health is for everyone and that no one should face life’s challenges alone.

Mr Jenkins is an ambassador for the charity and organised our participation. In his own words… “A massive THANK YOU to everyone that contributed to the LHS TidyButt cycle challenge!!!
Our collective effort and incredible donations have raised well over our £20,000 target… the TidyButt cycle challenge has raised £21,750!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm of the LHS community – I can’t than you enough! This money will make an incredible difference to the lives of the people who need our help, and now we can do more because of your support – thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

Until next year…
Festival time…
Following a unit of work exploring contemporary Welsh music, including artists such as Dom a Lloyd and Sage Todz, many Year 9 and 10 Welsh students were set a special challenge: attend Tafwyl in Cardiff last weekend and send us evidence that they were there! Bonus points were even on offer for anyone who managed to grab a selfie with a Welsh celebrity.
We were absolutely delighted by the fantastic response. So many students attended the festival, had a wonderful time, and proudly shared their photos and videos with the Welsh department. It was fantastic to see them experiencing the Welsh language beyond the classroom—using Welsh in a real-life setting, enjoying live music, and celebrating Welsh culture.
Da iawn to everyone who took part, and diolch for embracing the challenge with such enthusiasm!
Tafwyl is an annual, free-to-enter arts and culture festival held in Cardiff, usually at the historic Cardiff Castle or Bute Park. It primarily celebrates the Welsh language, bringing together crowds for live music, comedy, and theatre. The weekend-long event features an outdoor “Maes” with street food, market stalls, and family-friendly activities. Although it centers on Cymraeg (the Welsh language), the event warmly welcomes everyone, including non-Welsh speakers and learners. Organized by Menter Caerdydd, it serves as a massive, inclusive showcase of modern Welsh life and community.

Question Time
On Monday 29th June LHS hosted our usual biannual Question Time event, but with a difference. This time, the roles were flipped. The staff were asking the questions and the students were in the hot seat to answer.
The event was based around a recent survey that students completed in relation to key aspects of classroom practice, including engagement, challenge, feedback, questioning, behaviour for learning and independence. The findings provided valuable insight into students experiences and help us validate areas of strength and identify priorities for further improvement.
The student panel/audience included our Senior Prefect Team, our inclusive School Council, and representatives from each year group. During the Question Time, members of the Senior Leadership team asked the students questions such as;
- When teachers ask questions in lessons, what helps you think more deeply and what doesn’t work?
- How often do you get the chance to talk about your ideas in lessons, and what makes those discussions useful or not useful?
- What kind of feedback from teachers actually helps you improve your work the most?
- What helps you stay focused in lessons and what usually distracts you?
The answers that the students gave were insightful and thought provoking. Their responses will help us to shape our pedagogical priorities for 2026-27.
Our thanks go to our panel of SLT, Mr. Maidment, Miss Evans and Mrs Bunn. I muscled in again on the Fiona Bruce role (my favourite).
Also, a massive vote of thanks goes to Hayden Watkins in Year 12 for a very professional job of recording the event for LHS Core TV.

Year 11 Prom – Thursday 25th June 2026
Year 11, what an incredible prom night! Despite the extreme heat, you arrived looking absolutely amazing, bringing style, confidence and smiles in abundance. It was wonderful to see everyone celebrating together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Your maturity, resilience and positivity shone throughout the evening, and you should be immensely proud of the way you represented yourselves. The atmosphere was full of laughter, friendship and excitement as you marked the end of an important chapter. Thank you for making the evening so special. We wish you every success for the future—you truly looked fantastic and made the night unforgettable.

We will share some more photographs from the professional photographer in due course, but for now, we’ll leave you with the above iconic moment from the evening!
LHS in the community
Many of our readers will be familiar with the Lisvane Festival, a popular annual festival that takes place each June! The festival brings residents together through a wide range of activities, including a traditional village fête, live music, sports events, family entertainment, arts and crafts, and community gatherings.
It is organised with the support of the local community and Lisvane Community Council, and this year, volunteers from Year 12 were right in the thick of it! The festival highlights the village’s strong community spirit and welcoming atmosphere. It provides opportunities for people of all ages to participate, socialise, and support local organisations, making it one of the most anticipated events in the Lisvane calendar.
The Festival Team have been in contact with us to say a huge thank you to the Year 12 students who volunteered. They rolled up their sleeves, got properly stuck in, and worked hard all with a brilliant can‑do attitude.
They made a real difference to the day and were a real credit to the school!

The Grove find their Groove
Finally today, we delighted to share some photos from a community partnership that we value greatly.
On Friday 26th June, members of The Grove were lucky enough to welcome Luke Richards from Llanishen Boxing Club. The students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a boxing session and learning about its positive impact on wellbeing. Boxing can support mental health by providing a healthy outlet for emotions, reducing stress, improving focus, and boosting mood through the release of endorphins. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to try something new while developing both physical and emotional resilience. We are all looking forward to the next session.
Here’s the crew in action – looking good everyone!
