20th March 2026

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr

The life cycle of a blazer

A heartfelt thank you to all our students and staff for an outstanding school Eisteddfod 2026! The talent, teamwork, and passion on display truly captured the spirit of our Nothing signals the imminent arrival of the Easter holidays quite like our annual ‘Blazer Exchange’ Day! Last week, Year 11 were invited to donate their blazers in the name of sustainability. Forty-eight hot wash cycles later and we now have hundreds of freshly laundered blazers that still have plenty of life in them.  They now need new owners.

Here are the first batch of blazers in need of a new home.  We invite anyone to bring in their current blazer to exchange for the next size up in preparation for September 2026.

Students in Years 7 to 10 are not required to wear the blazer in the summer term. Therefore, before the current blazer disappears into a floordrobe or the ether, NOW is the time to take action. Please see your Year Team to make an exchange.

This is also a timely reminder that whilst the students are not required to wear their blazer in the summer term, they cannot replace it with a hoodie.  If the weather requires layers, those layers must be the school jumper and blazer.

Our LHS Tree Nursery is born!

Next today, we are delighted to share the news that we have received £600 of funding from the Tree Council of Wales to learn how to graft trees and begin establishing our own tree nursery.

Matt from the Tree Council launched this initiative by delivering a workshop to some Year 7 students, demonstrating how to graft apple trees. This means that, in as little as a year, we will be able to produce young apple trees to distribute to the local community.

The funding will also allow us to install a solar-powered irrigation system in the polytunnel area, helping to keep the trees watered when students are not in school.

On Friday 20th March, the Tree Council are back with us. They are donating lots more trees.  So, Year 7 and our Eco Council will be out in force.  Watch this space!

Meanwhile, whilst Year 7 were ‘grafting’ apple trees, Year 10 were out in the garden doing some grafting of their own.

Outside in the school garden, one of the main jobs underway is the feather edging for the pathways to give infrastructure and access to the whole garden space.  The Year 10 Construction crew were hard at work with their tools.  Lots of measuring and practical skills on show. They were also starting to dig over the next plot ready for raised beds. Wellies on and off they go…

Updates from our Wellbeing Centre

With the unsettled week that we have had, this is a pertinent time to remind all members of our community that the staff in our Wellbeing Centre are always on hand.

I snapped this photo from inside Wellbeing on the first of what we hope will be many sunny days.

With exams approaching, please speak to your tutor, PAL, or Year Team Leader about anything that is on your mind.

Last week, the Wellbeing Centre was the location for some check-ins with our Young Carers.

National Young Carers Week 2026 shines a spotlight on the remarkable children and young people who balance daily life with caring responsibilities. This year’s nationwide theme, Fair Futures for Young Carers, calls for better recognition, support and opportunities so every young carer can thrive alongside their peers. In our school, we proudly celebrated this week by welcoming our support worker, Rhian, for dedicated check‑ins, offering space for our young carers to be heard, valued and encouraged.

News from Enrichment

One staple that will continue through the summer, offering some respite from revision and exams is the Enrichment programme.  Over the year, we have tried to showcase different activities to show students the range of opportunities on offer for future selection.

Last week, Snazzy Snacks were making smoothies and milkshakes. Pizza Club were doing exactly what you would expect!  And next Wednesday is their pizza competition day so we look forward to updates from them. Hair Styling were competing for ‘Whackiest Hairstyle’ so we’ve captured a few.  There are also a few from Portrait Club.

I couldn’t finish this segment without a shout out to our water sports on the reservoir crew.  They have shown such bravery!  They have thrown themselves (literally) into the cold, wet, and windy spring we’ve had. They are made of sturdy stuff.  After sessions in kayaking and paddle boarding, they were treated to a slightly easier session last week.  They climbed aboard 2 giant SUPs and were towed around the reservoir by the safety boat! Great job everyone.  One last spring session before we switch to your summer choices!

Let’s give Sienna our vote!

Miss Teen Wales is a national competition celebrating confidence, community involvement and personal growth for girls aged 13 to 17 across Wales. The programme includes interviews, special events and a two‑day grand finale featuring an empowerment masterclass, rehearsals and a stage show coronation evening. Contestants also take part in fundraising for A‑Sisterhood, a Wales‑based charity supporting and empowering women and girls worldwide. The competition aims to inspire young Welsh women to become role models and ambassadors for kindness, leadership and social contribution. Applications require Welsh residency or heritage and a commitment to the event’s values

Let’s all get behind Sienna Farmar who is fundraising and raising awareness for type one diabetes and the charity A-Sisterhood.  Sienna is representing Cardiff and she needs your vote!

Battle of the Bands

Moving seamlessly from one amazing gig into another. Good luck to all the staff and student bands that are competing at our Battle of the Bands showdown on Thursday evening. Who will take the coveted first place in 2026?!

A phenomenal array of successes from our PE crew, always blue!

This final update could be a Headteachers Blog in its’ own right.  Let’s share some updates from the PE department.

From the world of Rugby…

The Year 9 rugby team participated in the Cardiff Schools 7s Competition at Trelai Park last week. In some horrendous conditions the boys played some fantastic rugby, scoring tries from all areas of the field. Their first game was against Whitchurch, which they comfortably won 33-12, with Luca Harrison scoring a brace.

Their second game was against Radyr and although close at half time, LHS pulled away to secure a 4 try victory. The final game of the cup was against Bro Edern and after scoring 5 second half tries the boys secured the win and claimed the Cardiff 7s Cup!

A brilliant achievement and nothing short of what they deserved!

Last week also saw an excellent display from our Year 8 rugby boys at the Cardiff Schools 7’s. The boys have gone from strength to strength over the last two years and it really showed on the pitch.

From the world of Football…

Well done to our Year 7A girls football team on making the Cardiff and Vale Cup Final after an impressive victory over an excellent Howells team!

Year 7 at the Welsh Schools FA victory away in Lampeter against Ysgol Bro Pedr.  You get a real sense of the game from these photographs! Goals were scored by Aarre, Pharrell, George and Ieuan.  Next – the semi-final game in Newtown against Aberconwy!

From the world of Netball…

Congratulations to the Year 7 netball team who became County Champions after an impressive display at Cardiff Metropolitan University! Great silverware ladies!

It was also a fantastic day for our Year 8 netball team as they finished 4th in the County Finals. Wowsers.  What a netball renaissance we are experiencing at LHS!

From the growing world of Basketball…

Last week also saw our basketball team showcasing their skills against the team from Bryn- Celynnog School.  It was a real team performance. The boys voted Dylan as Player of the Match for LHS. He demonstrated some excellent skills today and his shooting was outstanding.

Before we leave, this will put a smile on a few faces.

Just as a parent will pull out some baby photos of their child for their 18th or 21st birthday party, the PE department treated us to a throwback photo of Louie Hennessey in his early days at LHS!

Louie earned his first cap for Wales in the Six Nations match v Ireland.  An amazing achievement and a fitting note to finish this blog.

Thank you for reading/Diolch am ddarllen,
