Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr

Social Enterprise and Children in Need – the full story!

A big well done to everyone who contributed to our fundraising efforts for Children in Need.  On Friday 14th November our Sixth Form Team did execute a cake sale, even if the Soak a Sixth Former/Staff member was halted in its tracks by Storm Claudia. By Monday, we were back on. The sun was shining. The sky was blue. And it was COLD! This only added to the bravery and sportsmanship of the 7 unlucky LHS volunteers/victims.

The water balloons were filled.  There was no backing down.  Huge kudos to Zach, Jack, Raz, Tyler and Sam from Years 12 and 13.  And huge kudos to Mr Maidment and Mr Card for taking the brunt of the water filled missiles.  Also, Mr Maidment is the poor soul under the full bucket of cold water at the finale. After year two, I do feel that this has become an LHS staple for Children in Need.  Which brave volunteers will step forward next year I wonder?!

Inside on Friday, things were a little more sophisticated and Pudsey kept a watchful eye.

Turning ideas in action our Den students led the way last week, designing and selling craft products bookmarks and keychains in their very own pop-up shop. Did you manage to bag one?

The Den Pop-Up Shop made a massive £428.67 (of course it had to end in 6 – 7!!). A fabulous team effort. Here are some snaps from the hundreds of student selfies on the iPads! Well done to Zak and Jacob for drumming up support outside. And well done to the beautiful furry model!!

A big thank you from all of us (and Pudsey!) to all the students and staff that supported the cause, they were awesome!

In all, the total raised across the different activities was over £800.  Until next year….

Social Enterprise – Curriculum updates from around the school

In other news from around the school this week…

Following the project work undertaken in Geography lessons last year, culminating at an event at the All-Nations Centre, a report has been published outlining the views of our young people on the Cardiff Local Development Plan.

The Child Friendly Cardiff team partnered up with Cardiff University and brought students from across the city together at the All-Nations Centre to delve into a range of issues that affect them. Young people from Llanishen High School, Bryn Celyn Primary School, Llysfaen Primary School, Springwood Primary School and Ton Yr Ywen Primary School took part.

They devised a neighbourhood plan that was underpinned by Children’s Rights and included green and blue spaces, areas to play and hang out, neighbourhoods that are safe and clean, and spaces that are inclusive for all abilities, ages and genders.

The Child Friendly Cardiff team have since worked with Cardiff University to analysis the data and outputs from the young people in an accessible report titled ‘Llanishen to Grow Up In’. They are now keen to close the feedback loop and tell students what has happened since, ensuring meaningful participation and accountability.

We will be sharing the outcome of the project with Year 7 and 8 students in lesson time. Here are some extracts from our young people in action, followed by a link to the full published report.

Here is the link to view the full report.  An excellent piece of work that could have a profound impact on future generations.

Construction underway!

Meanwhile, our Year 9 Construction crew are currently working on making and building benching for the polytunnel area. Here are some pictures of them hard at work with Mr Owen and Mr Hustin. The aim is to set the larger posts in concrete foundations. This course is a very valued part of our curriculum.  It develops real life and practical skills and allows the students to impact on improving our environment in a very concrete way (pun fully intended).

Staff Seren yr wythnos

This week, our student Criw Cymraeg group have nominated Mrs Bradley for her use of the Welsh language.  Staff can be nominated for their effort or their accuracy and pronunciation!

Well done Miss! Da iawn!

Harry and George hit the international football scene in Portugal!

Congratulations to George Garner and Harry Dawes who were selected to attend the international football tournament in Portugal on behalf of Cardiff and Vale SFA.

They had an absolutely brilliant tournament, coming 12th out of 35 teams from Europe and America – including academies from Champion League teams.

Here they are in Portugal. Playing at this level really is an achievement and we are so proud of them!

Owen Watkin Inspires Year 9 and 10 Students to Embrace Welsh!

We were thrilled to welcome Welsh international rugby star Owen Watkin to our school for an inspiring session with Year 9 and Year 10 students this week. Owen spoke passionately about the importance of learning Welsh, not only as a way to connect with our heritage and culture but also as a skill that opens doors in education, careers, and everyday life in Wales.

During his visit, Owen shared personal stories from his journey in rugby and explained how the Welsh language has shaped his identity and strengthened his connection to the community. His message was clear: speaking Welsh is a powerful tool that celebrates who we are and where we come from.

Students left the session feeling motivated and proud of their language, ready to continue their learning with renewed enthusiasm. A huge diolch yn fawr to Owen for taking the time to inspire the next generation of Welsh speakers!

Wishing all of our readers a lovely weekend.

Thank you for reading/Diolch am ddarllen,

Mrs Sarah Parry, Headteacher
