LHS Year 6 into 7 Transition

Dear parents/guardians,

I do hope that you are all well. Here at Llanishen High School we have been planning for your child to join us in September. Obviously the usual series of induction and transition events have had to be cancelled (If operational guidance changes we will respond accordingly) but to help reassure both students and parents alike we have put together a number of resources, these include:

  • School prospectus 2021/2022 – providing general information about the school itself and the specific structures and procedures we have in place.
  • A parents’ supplementary guide to transition – a document that provides answers to some of the frequently asked questions, forms of communication between parents and school, curriculum outline and extra curricula opportunities available.
  • School Uniform – YC Sports provides a comprehensive stock of the uniform requirements that all students will need. (sales@ycsports.com)
  • A virtual tour video that will be sent to all pupils and primary schools so that they can become more familiar with the site and school environment. This video will include a welcome from the Head, Mrs Parry and include advice, information and guidance from key staff and students.

We recognise that the transition from a familiar and much loved primary school is an anxious time for students and parents alike and to help this we have a member of the Senior Leadership Team dedicated to overseeing and coordinating the transition. This is Mr Rob Wilson, assistant head teacher and Transition Coordinator, who co-ordinates the following:

  • The Year Team Leader, Mrs Sarah Tyler (styler@llanishen.cardiff.sch.uk) and the year 7 Pupil achievement leader Mrs Cath Giddy (Catherine.Evans3@llanishen.cardiff.sch.uk) will contact the Primary Schools to speak to our Year 6 colleagues about each pupil. They pass on key information relating to each pupil. This provides invaluable information, enabling the year team leader to successfully set up and organise the form groups. The Year Team Leader will also aim to speak to Year 6 students to introduce themselves’ and talk to them about the changes ahead. This will done either by a face to face meeting and or over a live TEAMS.meeting.
  • Our student Buddies and present year 7 students have been included in the video clip to provide some answers to frequently asked questions and provide reassure to the year 6 that all will be well.
  • Our additional learning needs team, led by our ALNCo (Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator), Mrs Ellen Pawar also liaises with each of the primary school ALNCos to gain more in depth information on students’ additional learning needs.
  • Colleagues from our Hearing Impaired Base and Autism Base, led by Mrs Estelle Williams & Mr Charlie Batten, will liaise with identified individual students in their primary schools to discuss their needs and ensure they are grouped appropriately.

You will find copies of all of the documents and information set out above on the right hand side of this page.  It has also been sent to all primary schools. I am sure that these documents and resources will answer many of your questions, but if you have any further queries or concerns please contact the school, using the e mail addresses provided. We look forward to seeing you all soon.
