DNA Workshop at Techniquest Cardiff

The students extracted DNA from their cheek cells using saline solution, then copied their DNA, creating over a billion new strands.

Then they amplified a section of non-coding DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).  To learn more about PCR, check out the great article over at Khan Academy.

The students had the opportunity to use advanced equipment, which they often wouldn't have the opportunity to use until University, such as micropipettes to develop their practical skills.

The lucky students learned about the composition of DNA, the ways in which the process deconstructs our DNA and the uses of the techniques, such as forensic science, ecology, and genetic studies. We’re very grateful to Techniquest, especially Jessie, James, and Caroline, for their incredible session.
