The Hearing Impaired Resource Base at Llanishen High School in partnership with mainstream staff seek to ensure that each child with a hearing impairment is given equivalent educational opportunities to their hearing peers.  There is also the same high expectation of success.

Provision

The Hearing Impaired Resource Base was established in September 1986 to meet the needs of Hearing Impaired pupils within Cardiff.  All admissions are arranged through the LEA.  The majority of our pupils come to us from the Resource Bases at two local Primary schools, Coed Glas and Cefn Onn.  We do however take pupils from Primary schools throughout Cardiff their admission is arranged by the Achievement and Inclusion Service.

Transition

The overall aim of the Department is to ensure the successful transition from Primary to Secondary and to continue to support the process so that H.I. pupils move smoothly and successfully through KS3 to KS4 and on to Post16.  This is achieved through our Transition Programme. Transition from KS2 – KS3 is managed by Mrs J. Whittaker, who attends transitional reviews at Y5 and Y6.   This is followed up by visits to Primary Schools; Y6 pupils then attend the High School for a series of lessons to build the confidence to achieve a successful transition between these Key stages.

Transition of pupils between KS3 – KS4 and KS4 – KS5 is supported by the specialist team and other relevant professionals, this ensures students and parents receive the necessary guidance enabling pupils to choose appropriate learning pathways.

Working Practices/Support

Hearing Impaired pupils are placed in form groups in the same way as all other pupils in the school.  They follow the mainstream curriculum; are supported in lessons and also timetabled for specialist teaching.  The aim of specialist teaching is to support both their mainstream curriculum and to develop individual communication/language skills.  Each pupil’s language, ability and communication needs are taken into consideration when planning individual programmes.

We aim to develop communication in English, whether spoken written or signed.  This is achieved by:-

  • Maximising the use of residual hearing

  • Exposure to spoken English at normal rhythm, intonation and pace

  • Access to a rich language environment

  • British Sign Language can be developed as a first language through visual and manual processes in a natural signing environment.  The use of BSL enables some students to access the mainstream curriculum.

We aim to provide the best possible acoustic environment for the development of listening skills.

Extra curricula activities
H.I. pupils are encouraged to take part in all aspects of the school community and in after school activities.  The Department runs its own Lunchtime clubs:-

Sign Club
Sign Club takes place every Tuesday lunchtime to promote communication skills for all pupils and staff at Llanishen High School.  It also provides the opportunity to encourage understanding, friendship and deaf awareness.

Homework Club
A supervised homework club takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes to encourage positive study skills and to ensure that H.I. pupils understand and are able to complete all homework tasks.
