MATHEMATICS AT AS AND A LEVEL.

Mathematics can be studied for its own beauty and integrity, or as a succinct language for describing and investigating the physical world.

Many areas of study now demand a high degree of numeracy and a facility for logical reasoning. Extending skills and knowledge beyond the level acquired at GCSE can support work in other subjects such as the sciences, Geography, Economics, Psychology and Computer Studies.

An A level in the subject is an invaluable qualification for numerous courses in higher education, for example, Engineering, Physics, Medicine, Business Studies, Computer Studies and Accountancy; it is an asset in several areas of employment.

Mathematics in the sixth form consists of three branches: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.

• Pure Mathematics includes fundamental advanced ideas such as calculus, as well as standard algebraic techniques.
• Mechanics is the application of mathematics to classical physics. It involves forces and types of motion.
• Statistics is the application of mathematics to situations of uncertainty. It involves data handling and probability.
Both Mechanics and Statistics build mathematical models of real-life situations using the tools of Pure Mathematics.
Students studying Physics would find the Mechanics course particularly useful, while geographers or economists will find statistics more helpful.

At Llanishen we use the AQA specification and offer courses in Pure Maths, Mechanics, Statistics and Further Pure Maths.

Students wishing to take one AS or A level in the subject need to follow the Pure Core course with either Mechanics or Statistics.
It is possible to take more than one A level in the subject, and students wishing to do this should discuss the available options with the Head of Department.

All modules studied in Year 12 are assessed at AS standard while year 13 modules are of A2 standard.

All examinations are 1 ½ hour papers; there is no coursework. Graphics calculators are allowed in all assessments except for the C1 examination which is a non-calculator paper.

Success in the three modular examinations taken at the end of year 12 leads to an AS level qualification.

Students are given individual guidance on the best option for them.

What’s available in the PSA?

Textbooks.

Revision materials.

You can order textbooks through the school or directly from Heinemann publishers at www.heinemann.co.uk or order these through the school.

A graphics calculator is useful, though not essential. These can be ordered through school.
