WINNING ENTRY OF THE
KATHERINE HORTON PRIZE FOR CREATIVE WRITING 2008
Laura Abraham, 7G
WET
The day is wet and so are we my friend
But do not let it get you down,
For we are all legends, legends in the rain!
The heavens are open showering us in
Glassy diamonds, which melt at our greedy
Fingertips, leaving us wet in guilt.
But we will be dry, we will be warm, we will
Be home.
Those frosty jewels are nothing compared
To the warmth and soul of our hearts, our
Gems, our jewels, our family.
So smile through the dampness and smile
Through the rain, for an affectionate fire is
Waiting to warm us to the very tips of our
Greedy fingertips and smoulder us in love.

LLANISHEN HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH FACULTY.
The English Faculty plays a
major role in the success of the school. Results compare well with local and
national benchmarks at all Key Stages and both English Language and English
Literature are very popular and successful in the Sixth Form. Many students
continue their studies in Higher Education.
The staff team is currently made up of 11 teachers, two of whom work a long
standing and very successful job share, one of whom is responsible for whole
school Key Skills organisation at 16-19 and another who acts as the school’s
SENCO. One of the school Assistant Heads (an economist) acts as support.

Links with the L.E.A. Advisory team are being closely developed. Members of
the Faculty have taken a lead in promoting and developing L.E.A. initiatives
in teaching and learning.
The Faculty benefited from a major refurbishment in 1999. This allows for
each teacher to have their own principal room. Interactive whiteboards or
data projectors are available in some rooms. The school’s Learning Resource
Centre with a large network of computers is located close at hand.
At Key Stage 3 pupils are
taught in mixed ability forms. The course is designed to encourage pupils to
become increasingly articulate and literate whilst developing their
appreciation of the spoken and written word. At Key Stage 4 the all pupils
are prepared for the W.J.E.C. G.C.S.E. in both Language and Literature at
the Higher Level with coursework based on reading of, at least, two core
texts. English courses are popular in the Sixth Form. There are currently
two groups in Years 12 and 13 for both English Language and Literature.
Students participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities, ranging
from those related specifically to exam syllabuses to the Key Stage 3
Creative Writing Competition and, with the support of the Library, shadowing
the annual Carnegie Competition.

YEAR 7
Pupils are taught in form groups throughout year 7. In the Autumn Term, in
order to help pupils familiarise themselves with Llanishen High School’s
English department, they complete a transition task that was started in
Primary school.
During each term pupils are assessed on their ability to read, write, speak
and listen. Every task that is undertaken has a specific focus aimed at
developing a pupil’s particular skill. Pupils’ work is kept in a portfolio
and taken with them into year 8.
YEAR 8
As in year 7, pupils are taught in form groups during their second year.
Similarly, they assessed with their ability to read, write, speak and
listen; however, the skills developed and tasks set are of a more
sophisticated nature.
At the end of the academic year pupil portfolios are used to determine
which set pupils will be placed in for Year 9.
YEAR 9
In Year 9 pupils are set according to their ability in the subject.
Setting is based on the quality of content in their Key Stage 3
portfolios. The common assignments still focus on each pupil’s ability to
read, write, speak and listen.
Pupils are assessed throughout the year and, based on the quality of their
work, become set accordingly for their GCSEs.
